I was giving the task to write about one minute portion about the lighting, sound and mis en scene in the scene 17 minute scene in the movie HUNGER.
The entirety of the scene is shot in low key lighting making the characters appear as silhouettes which is appropriate because the conversation is one of a dark and serious nature. Bobby Sands is on a search for justice and as a part of his protest he is on a hunger strike and is on a slow journey to death, However the Priest with Bobby Sands' best interest in mind goes to persuade him to stop his hunger strike.
The priest joins bobby in a cigarette in order to comfort him and make him not feel alone, the fill light and backlight help project the cigarette smoke that is in the atmosphere, the cigarette smoke in the scene helps reinforce the context of war between Northern Ireland and Britain.
